Firebrands – Christians with Bite from Yesteryear

pastorsrevolutionSunday morning I opened up a story from Doug Giles that got my attention – it was entitled, “If America Goes Down the Toilet, I’m Blaming Lame Pastors.” What the heck? Should I be offended? Nope. Here’s why:

The pastors and Christians of yesteryear were not wimpy, politically correct people who advocated nothing, nor did they stand with the British who were the tyrants in charge.  As Doug puts it, they “threw lighter fluid” on the fires of the revolution by their rhetoric.

firebrands

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

It is also true that the current crop of fools in America have re-written many of our founders into atheists or that favorite term “deist.” They most certainly were not.

The firebrands

From Catholics like Charles Carroll – the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence – to Baptists, Quakers, and Presbyterians- Christians then were not afraid to pledge themselves to removing the yoke of tyranny from their necks.

They were not cowards content to stay complacently in their own little world.

Presbyterian ministers in particular formed a large bloc of the participants in the American Revolution even before the rest of the colonies.  They weren’t the un-involved folk of today’s mainline denominations.

“The Convention of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, met in Charlotteville, May 1775, and was composed mainly of Presbyterian ministers, elders, and members. A Committee was appointed to draft a declaration of independence for North Carolina, which was prepared and adopted on the 31st of May, 1775 – more than a year before that declared by the united colonies.”

“Resolved, that we do hereby declare ourselves a free and independent people – and are, and of right ought to be, a sovereign and self-governing association, under the control of no power other than that of our God and the General Government of the Congress, to the maintenance of which independence we solemnly pledge to each other our mutual co-operation, our lives, our fortunes, and our most sacred honor.” The Christian Life and Character of the Civil Institutions of the United States by Benjamin F. Morris

And then there was Robert Treat Paine- one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He had been a chaplain in the Army and preached in Boston on occasion. I doubt strongly that anyone would have been able to tell him not to use the name of Christ in his prayers. Someone would have been wearing their wooden teeth  in a place other than their mouth.

John Witherspoon, a descendant of John Knox, preached at Princeton in 1776.

“Whoever is an avowed enemy of God, I scruple not to call him an enemy to his country. “

He did not give a flaming fig whether or not he was “politically correct.” You were an enemy of God, (not Allah either) then you were an enemy of your country.

Many of our founders were educated in places like Princeton or Yale. They were highly knowledgeable about life and the effects of tyrannical governments on American citizens. Today our universities and Ivy League colleges have grown into liberal bastions with no connection whatever to their own past.

“Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure, when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gifts of God?” Thomas Jefferson

Does that sound like an “atheist” to you? Thomas Jefferson has been pegged as an atheist by nearly every college in the U.S.

Standing together

These people stood together- pastors, parishioners, educators, lawyers, shopkeepers, blacksmiths, farmers, wives …as people who could see the plans of the British King to destroy them.

We have allowed a man to become our king. Unlike our forefathers, many have not seen the danger nor moved to stop it.

Our forefathers endured some of the harshest most difficult conditions to win our freedoms.

They used the Bible as a school book for lessons in life and practice. They had inner strength.

There are some who have fortitude, of course, but we need more who will stand up. We must stop trying to be important to the masses. We must stop putting ministers on pedestals or pandering to government goons or special interests.

The night is “far spent” and we have little time left to do the right thing. And the right thing is not playing to the politically correct, fawning, selfish ways of those around us.

It’s time to repent, America. You are about to lose everything you have taken for granted.

“If my people who are called by My Name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
