Boston Globe/Slate writer: It would be ‘funny’ to see ‘all’ gun-rights supporters ‘shot dead’

Hate2Responding to the tragic theater shooting in Lafayette, Louisiana, Luke O’Neil, a freelance writer whose articles have appeared in the Boston Globe, Slate and other publications, issued a tweet Friday saying it would be “funny” to see “all” supporters of gun rights “shot dead.” The tweet was deleted, but not before being captured by Twitchy and other publications.

“I would never personally harm anyone or instruct anyone else to do so,” he said in the now-deleted tweet. “I just think it would be funny if all gun rights people got shot dead.”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

He wasn’t finished, however, and expressed hope that Stephen Miller, an independent conservative blogger, would be killed in “random, tragic gun-fire.”

He later changed his Twitter handle to “Guns good im bad” and issued a tweet telling followers that he really doesn’t want to see anyone killed. “For the record I obviously don’t want anyone to get shot, even big dumb babies,” he said. “I can’t believe that needs to be said. I love you.”

“I don’t like guns and I get angry when there’s another pointless shooting,” he said in another tweet. “I’m not ever going to do anything about it though besides tweet.”

But the damage had already been done. Many on Twitter took O’Neil to task for his violent tweet.

“Here’s a lovely, compassionate, tolerant liberal for you,” one person said. “Would the shooter in this scenario be a gun rights person? Or would you assign an official executioner, fascist?” asked Twitter user “RBPundit.”

“Behold, a democrat ‘journalist’ showing typical democrat ‘love and tolerance,'” another person said. “Gun violence is awful. Except when it’s toward ppl I disagree with politically,” another Twitter user said sarcastically.

“Sometimes you find a line between sane and insane…ooops I just found it,” tweeted conservative talk show host and blogger Wayne Dupree. “Guess he doesn’t understand that ‘gun rights people’ are law abiding & armed,” said another Twitter critic.

Newsbusters’ Spencer Raley said O’Neil exhibited “traditional liberal tolerance at it’s finest.” Raley wasn’t finished with his criticism, and wondered if any of the outlets O’Neil writes for would take him to task for his bloodthirsty message.

“Although one thing is certain,” Raley added. “[I]f O’Neil were a conservative writer, he would already be banned from journalism for life.”

O’Neil’s response, unfortunately, is not uncommon in the aftermath of shootings like the one that took place in Louisiana. In 2013, for example, Donald Kaul, a retired columnist for the Des Moines Register, called for a repeal of the Second Amendment, the forced elimination of the NRA, and the death of gun owners who refuse to give up their weapons. He later said that he was only being satirical, but Newsbusters’ Tom Blumer said he wasn’t buying the explanation.

Mike Dickinson, a Virginia liberal who once sought the House seat formerly held by Republican Eric Cantor, said he was okay with exterminating all five million members of the NRA. He even went so far as to ask God to strike them dead with Ebola.

In February 2011, we first said liberalism, at its core, is an ideology of rage and hate. Sadly, liberals like O’Neil prove that assertion correct on just about any given day. It’s almost enough to make one wonder if liberals really do want a second, bloody civil war in America.
